Redondela

 We are in Redondela—Under 100km to Santiago. I had a quick look at John Brierley’s take on the walk from Porrino to Redondela before setting out this morning. Didn’t like the sound of ‘challenging stage’ and ‘steep up and down’- so Mavis the walking stick had an encore appearance. However, no loose stones —really, good surfaces just STEEP. Nice walk through forests, towns and a bit of side of the road.

Stopped for a coffee in Mos and met a few familiar faces. The Camino gift shop here can meet all your needs from fridge magnets to all kinds of Peregrino gear. They have a stamp. Collecting 2 stamps a day will get you that hard-earned Compostela at the end now. 

Then there was a little incident.  Shoved change from the coffee into my zipper pocket in front of pants, and we headed out. A short time later something felt strange in my leg, so gave it a shake. Out fell 5 euros. Ugh. I realized these were not the pants with zipper pocket, they were the zip offs! Money had gone straight down the leg.  So, another 5 euros had fluttered off into the breeze. If someone was lucky enough to find it, have a few Estrellas on me!

Pretty easy day. We are at cute place Rua Do Medio pension. Some bars conveniently located right below us. A little worried that it’s Saturday night, but maybe everyone will get drunk and go home early.

Saw some stone slabs today that I thought were picnic tables in that large park near Saxamonde. But no seats. Anyone know?

 Well we made it. Don’t have a lot of news, so just going to give my impression of things so far. It’s fairly easy to fly to Europe now.  Flights were very full and everyone wearing n95 masks.  If you are going to Germany be careful, the PCR  test must be  48 hours not 72 hours before. We were in transit in Frankfurt  so no problem,  but if you are just flying to Germany be careful.   On arrival in Portugal we had a random vaccine card check and you also need to fill in a passenger locator form on line. They asked for it in both SFO and Porto. Our seat mate was a lovely Iranian  woman who hadn’t been back  home for  5 years . She was very excited and still had another long flight after we all departed in Frankfurt. We were all one row behind business class. So yes we did the walk of shame past those lay down seats in business and watched them get their damn champagne. They ran out of  good  food choices for us,  ...

Porto the return

 We arrived back in Porto on what I like to call the Flix bus COVID express. Very bad masking and hot packed bus. That was last night. We did our COVID tests today. Negative  so far- so we can fly back. If COVID does  appear at least we will be back in the States.  Have a nice apt here for a few nights where all the action is near the station. We are all packed up off to airport early in morning. Sigh. Tons of group tours  here, lots of people traveling. It’s a whole other world out here! So glad we came!
